How to get facebook newsfeed to look like it did, if you want to!
This is my first blog ever!
Like all aspirant writers I had hoped that my first blog would be something so profound that just on the basis of this one article – readers would be inundating Amazon.com with pre-orders for my almost finished first novel entitled The Stiletto Code. (© 2010 De Villiers Hilton Partnership)
Okay it been almost finished for the last 10 years, but its already got its own ISBN number, we've copyrighted idea and I swear I am almost there. As an incentive to get it done now, I may start releasing the chapters on this blog just to help carry me over the creative finish line.
In my first blog I had also hoped to write something so funny that TV and event producers would be cracking up so much at my hilarity, that they would be gasping for breathe and slapping their thighs as they reached for their mobiles to tell their PA’s, 'Get hold of dat guy - 'He's hilarious!'
As far as writing any profound or real life-changing humour today - well I am going to have set that aside for something far more important has arisen.
Something that has unsettled my facebook friends and I so much, that I am going to have to subjugate and martyr any dreams of this first blog joining the annuals of online literary history in the spirit of the title of my blog which is WeZAtribe!
WeZAtribe! is basically my way of saying and hopefully a funky expression of ‘We are a tribe!’ And it is something I really so believe!
All of us who are floating through space on this planet earth as it circles round the sun make up the members of the tribe of life that has arisen on this particular paradise for this particular time.
In spite of all our superficial differences, which some would try and emphasize in order to control and divide us, we are all pretty much the same and form part of one gigantic tribe of inter-connected life - an inter-dependent tribe of all the living creatures that have arisen on this vessel we call Earth.
Planet Earth - A giant magical terracotta pot carried on the head of some ancient wizard who has filled it to the brim with rushing aquamarine waters, draped in dappled emerald plants and which is now placed upon the cosmic camp fires of our sun. We all now as members of this tribe are afforded perhaps only this time to come together to gather round the burning logs that spark and flare, so as to warm and see ourselves; and comfort and cheer each other as the bright beings we are now silhouetted against stars that sparkle though the midnight blue tent of the heavens … (FX cue: sound of needle scratching record) Okay that needs some editing and I must save it for my novel.
But in conclusion of this introduction of WeZAtribe! - like any good tribe we should as far as possible have each other’s backs covered. And so in this spirit here’s what I have discovered
Well yesterday (22 Sept 2011) on facebook there was high drama as without much warning ( was there any?) we all woke up to a new format. As much as I found facebook to be such a source of inspiration on so many levels – it always has been a bit of labyrinth of who can see what you post and what are you sharing with who.
So after finally becoming comfortable and feeling relatively secure with the old format, it came as quite a shock and quite unsettling that some quite drastic changes had been made. There’s an additional news feedbox that constantly updates with pretty minor information like so and so just liked someone’s picture – Being a little paranoid I posted that ‘Some friends and I are concerned about how much extra information is appearing on the new rolling news feed. Tell me you are not seeing stuff like 'Lawrence just got up from his desk - Lawrence just looked out the window - Lawrence just rolled his eyes - Lawrence just rolled a j - Lawrence just rolled round the floor - Lawrence is still on the floor.... :)’
Here it is ...at last ...how to get your news feed to look like the old one
Okay after beating round the bush lets get to the chase
1. Click on the main facebook logo in the top left hand corner of the page as you would when accessing the news feed page
2. Look below your profile pic on the left hand-side of the page you will see in light grey the word ‘FAVORITES’
3. Below that also in light grey you will see ‘LISTS’
4. Click on ‘Lists’ The middle section of the page where the new items normally are will change and you will see some listed items
5. Look for the box top right in this section which says + Create a list
6. When you click on it – it will ask you to name list – You can call it anything – I called mine Newsfeed 1.
7. Once you have named it – click create list – It will then ask you to add friend to list so you can see their updates
8. Now all you need to do is add all your friends or however many or whoever you chose (Don’t forget me hey!) and once you have done that …
9. Click done – If you have a gazillion friends you some – have a cup of tea and then go back and add more a little later
10. Now although we may all get used to the new fb – whenever you feel like seeing updates more in the format of the way things used to be – you can just access the newsfeed page as you would normally and then go to lists and click on the one we have just set up and Bob’s your Aunty – there all the updates will come as they used to.
Okay one last thought ...for now!
In closing I also posted yesterday – ‘I just had a thought that with the pics being bigger in the news feed and news feed constantly updating others minor activities- will this not eat up extra data unnecessarily and end up costing the consumer more. I wonder especially in SA where the consumer is still being so badly ripped off with internet data bundle prices’
I will save discussing that aspect of the great data bundle rip off further for a future blog - suffice to say that I am sure cyberspace is unlimited and they who are keeping the internet taps turned so tight are doing the people of South Africa a great injustice by making it so expensive and hamstringing the potential of many and should be ashamed of themselves. Okay I said I would save it … for now!
Thanks to fb friend Thea Boulogne for pointing me in the direction as to how to sort of get facebook news feed back to the old look or at least having that option as well.
Again while you are here I would so appreciate if you visit the rest of the site and check out some original songs on
