14 years ago to the day I took my last drink!
By 1998 I had become a once a month binge party animal! It must have been the Irish in me as I would never fall over, but my body and mind became intolerant of it.
Never kept alcohol at home but after a show or a few toots at a friends house, when everyone else headed home, I would turn into the lone-ranger and split whatever party I was at to head off and go and 'save' Hillbrow at 2AM in the morning.
On some occasions I have vague re-collections of entering some club and asking the DJ repeatedly if he could turn the music off so I could sing Nkosi Sikelele at the top of my voice and to let all the residents know that I was back (I had lived there mid '80s) and everything was going to be A-Okay.
And when security would ask me to leave I would turn into the most indignant drunk one can imagine and would wonder why some were queuing up to 'klap' me and in some cases already had. Fortunately some kind souls would ease me out of the situation I had created. I think I was trying to recapture some part of my youth, but I would wake up the next morning with only twilight zone recollections of the night before...
Although I had had some great times previously, my body had reached the stage where I would have, I suppose, an allergic reaction to it. I was lucky that I scared myself enough to quit, and was lucky that it took only one phone call to AA where the man told me on the phone that if I did not stop I would be a gonna soon.
So by the grace I stopped. And as I learned to go out and party without it, I realized I was not the same young man who would need a few toots in social occasions to feel comfortable and I was able to still talk absolute nonsense and silly stuff with the best of them even when sober! I remain very grateful to the grace and angels out there that saw me through that time.
