Just finished reading my first novel on a smartphone - Just downloaded the Kindle app (free) - bought the ebook which was The Zulu Warrior by Andrew Barlow - pressed download and hey presto there it was ready to read. The app even remembers where you left off and you can get right back into it when you continue to read again.
The Zulu Warrior is an absolutely compelling read. It takes you to the early 1800's in South Africa and is a story told by a Zulu warrior as he reflects on his life as a young warrior. (link to order at end of this article)
The author's easy style makes you feel like you are right there with him as he finds himself just on the edge and looking in on the tribal rings of power of Shaka's and then Dingaan's inner circle.
While reading it, I felt like I was sitting around a fire with this warrior Ugqoyi- utterly fascinated and sometimes horrified and often deeply moved as his story takes us right into the heart of Zulu nation as the first settlers arrive in their territory.
The author's knowledge of this period and love of the Zulu people shines through as his Zulu warrior as the narrator shows great empathy, such wisdom and astute reflections on the times as we are carried along with him into battle and sit in listening to the Chief's and military commanders as they plan their next move to protect their territories.
I was kept on the edge of my seat as I traveled with the Zulu warrior, and felt the tenuousness of life and survival during this watershed period in South African history as the civilizations met for the first time.
And when the warrior had finished his tale, I longed for him to continue with his story - as one would when listening to a great storyteller as the bush fire turns to embers.
And as one would be left gazing at the brilliant stars of the African nights, reflecting on what those who came before us had gone through - so,so much - for us all to now be so blessed to love and call South Africa home.
