Who would have thought that English Grammar could make anyone want to get up and dance! Here we go 'disco' as we reveal a 'secret' to learning English which I think my students and I have been discovering which is 'Don't get tense about English tense!' Please see lyrics below.
Once you know the lyrics try it over any music track
We often sing this in my language workshops. As students get familiar with the lyrics we have even started to use other styles of music tracks to sing and rap it over. I have loved seeing the students becoming more and more confident with the lyrics. One alternative style we have tried which cracks us up laughing is singing it as if we are calling a Square Dance in Country and Western tradition with heavy Southern accents.
Finish on a high note
It's been great for building a wonderful team spirit as well as a way to finish classes on a high note and to remind us how the present simple tense works. A special shout out and thanks to my brilliant students over the last year featured in this pilot video! I was very moved to see that some of students had even made their own video slideshows using the song featuring pics of them and friends while in London.
Hope you enjoy and as always may all your good times be present continuous and future perfect!
Lyrics written & performed by Lawrence Hilton
Now in our lives
We have the past
Things that we have done
We remember - times back then
Boy, did we have fun!
And as we look to what we plan
We talk about the future
But don't worry too much about what might be
According to my tutor
Only one time - really matters
To the past we can say, 'Chow!'
The future's coming, it's on its way
But come on let's talk about NOW!
Don't get tense about English tense! (repeat)
In this moment we get a gift
The present's in the present.
It makes me smile, see my dimple
Guess what It's called the present simple
2nd verse continued
You can use it - to talk about now
or if it happens all the time
Like the earth goes round the sun each day
I catch the bus at half past nine!
I like coffee - she likes tea
If you don't like coffee
Then we don't agree
But I am happy
And so is she
We beg to differ in harmony
Add the subject .
Plus the auxiliary
then the main verb comes after that
It's as simple as it could be.
Speaking of to be or not to be
Just lose the auxiliary
I am, he is, they are all
Present simple & as happy as we can be!
Don't get tense about English tense
Rather get a SENSE of English tense but
Don't get tense about English tense!
