English Teacher Doris Zulu: 'I'm willing to do whatever it takes...'
While I lived in South Africa I was fortunate to co-produce and present a social development series in 2004 called 'Siyaphambili' a Zulu phrase which means 'We are moving forward!'
The sponsored series featured brilliant South Africans who devote their day to day lives to the upliftment of their communities. One of the wonderful and inspiring people I met was Doris Zulu. You can hear more from Doris who is an English teacher in the video below.

Doris lives in a small rural town called Vryheid in the Kwazulu Natal province of South Africa.
South Africa has a very high unemployment rate. So with this in mind in her own impoverished community Doris with very little at her disposal, decides to set up a English Literacy Community School to assist in raising the literacy levels in her area.
Doris was such an inspiration to meet and we were bowled over by her quiet energy, her humour and her absolute commitment when she told us, 'I'm willing to do whatever it takes!'
Doris Zulu like so many teachers around the world is really moving us forward!

More in this series can be seen on the social development page of this website at http://lawrencehilton.com/social-development.html such as a program on the longest health train in the world and the brilliant work of SA Guide Dog Association.
This series was broadcast first on ETV South Africa in 2004.
Please note I have no current association with sponsors of this series. In South Africa and worldwide it is vital to have the buy-in of corporate companies in community projects and we were so very impressed by the staff members of the company who devote so much of their spare time to assist in supporting the projects. They are part of the story.

Sadly Moira Winslow has passed recently. It was a great honour for the production team and I to have met her and she leaves a wonderful legacy with her life's work.
